Source: provided by the Petropol magazine, the creators of the Petropol telegram channel decided to publish a journal dedicated to the daily life of pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg. The first issue dedicated to the gastrust industry of the capital of the Russian Empire and the Gurmans of the Silver Age will be released in December. Who and how did this idea occur to?
In fact, the idea came literally in the first month of the work of Petropol. We created the telegram channel in April, in the midst of Covid and immediately loudly called ourselves a magazine. And then they thought that it would be great to make a paper magazine. It is clear that then we had experience and competencies, and there was not enough material. But this idea has matured for three or four years, and when I turned to Sasha Alexander Kuvshinnikov.
It successfully coincided here - I have enough experience in regarding printed magazines. I did, in particular, the Russian Esquire is now coming out under the name "Rules of Life." When Semyon said that Petropol was going to publish a printed magazine, we already clearly knew what and how to do. The moment, in my opinion, we chose a successful one. Everyone is tired of online, from all these digital stories.
I believe that [the printed magazine] as a vinyl record is some kind of thing that you can hold in your hands, a beautiful artifact that will stay with you, unlike these digital materials that will be forgotten the next day. But now it feels like everyone is doing print magazines, including Gazprom-Media. We joke, of course, that they all imitate us. We started a new trend. You have an open telegram channel for approximately 9 thousand subscribers, but there is still a closed one.
What are you writing about there? We made a small club because people asked to turn on the comments.
I personally had the idea that when you read the magazine, you cannot leave a comment to the material, and I did not want to cllate the channel. But since there is a request for this, we made such a second channel, such a closed club with a paid subscription, there are comments, reactions, chat, and there we publish some additional materials, some work notes. In addition, this is also a focus group, a pool of faithful readers, with whom we can consult and ask a question in something.
Surprisingly, there are no more than half Petersburgers in this club, all the rest are Moscow and other regions. How can this topic hook the modern reader? Firstly, this topic is especially close to the current Petersburgers. When you read some materials, you recognize yourself in many plots, it seems that a temporary line between that era and this one is erased. That is, Petersburgers at the beginning of the 20th century also loved to go somewhere in the evening on a cocktail.
Secondly, this topic we had already worked out so deeply, many friendly contacts formed as a result of various of our various collaborations. And it seems to us that now not only the public, but also the business, including the restaurant, has a request for some such identity. For example, the same Bar "Bear", in the reconstruction of which we took part in the Plaf-Project of the Renaissance of the pre-revolutionary bar at the Bear restaurant at the Bolshaya Konyushenny.
We say everywhere and write that we are not a historical magazine, we are more about the lifestyle. We have no task for a person to leaf through some reference and sighs that we irrevocably lost. On the contrary, we have such an ambition so that a person does the same thing that he does so. That is, you take the “Petropol”, you go to your favorite bar, you order, maybe not the cocktail that you usually take, but some historical, because we will also have recipes on the pages, you just drink it on Friday in the evening, just with a slightly different context and the feeling that we gave you.
We want to emphasize that the city is the same that we walk along the same streets as our heroes, about which we read in the textbooks, but who were actually not bronze monuments or portraits on the walls, but with the same living people as we are. We will have materials about which establishments were, who drank where, who ate where, on what occasion. There will be recipes for dishes, cocktail recipes.
There will be bar-hopping routes that are relevant at that time. There will be stories about which institution who could be found. There will be addresses, of course. We would like to immerse the reader into this world, transfer him a little to our Petersburg, but not as a museum exhibit, but as in some living story with which we can interact. We want a person to feel this story as his own, as something, what can be used and with what you can find internal continuity.
Is the topic of the second number known? We think that he will go out at least twice a year. If it goes well, then four, it is unlikely more, because it is such a collective thing rather. Regarding the next topic, I can hint that we do not want to become locked in St. Petersburg and we will travel a little in Russia. And so in future rooms there may be sport, art, architecture, mysticism, maybe some kind of night life.There is a huge amount of material.
He is all beautiful, constantly stumble upon something when working unexpected and constantly feel this feeling, as in this meme-"well, yes." Here is my favorite example - this is when Semyon found a menu card from Astoria with breakfast. It was a breakfast on August 13, that is, just exactly exactly years ago. What struck us, at the end of the menu was just ordinary coffee, Turkish coffee and filter.
We wondered, it turns out that in Germany in X we began to experiment with such a form of making coffee. And already in the year in St. Petersburg it was possible to take a filter coffee for breakfast. And when we find such stories, this, of course, inspires further to dig deep. These are archives and periodicals of pre -revolutionary. It helps a lot that periodicals are now digitized, so in our century, probably, it is a little easier to engage in such research.
But we also go to the archives, because much is still hiding exactly where where you need to order, receive, read. These are some industry magazines, if we talk about restaurants. For example, the “restaurant business”, which restaurateurs for restaurateurs did in imperial times. It is online not available and is only in the National Library on the diarlms made in the year of my birth, so their quality is quite dubious.
This is a little sad for us, because, for example, in this magazine unique pictures of restaurants that we cannot pull out in any way. I was told that if I write candidate or doctoral, then in a scientific direction you can simply ask for the magazine to be taken out and scanned, and so it is unavailable. This is also one of the reasons why we decided to make our own artistic illustrations.
A very large layer of materials is supplied with diary entries, in artistic prose of Kuprin, Averchenko quite a few plots. The diaries of the poet Mikhail Kuzmin is a separate pleasure, because he loved to write every day that today we took in such a bar on a cocktail and so on. Well, some kind of scientific historical literature. Still, we do not abandon the works of our predecessors who studied this topic.
Such a result was a surprise? Craudfunding for us is more likely this form of pre -order. This is a good way to advertise and a good way to feel support, it is really important for us. And it is always very nice when you recognize a person in the list of customers, and this is one of our regular readers, or some kind of celebrity, or, conversely, a person whom you do not know, ordered from somewhere in the new Urengoy.
This also inspires very much. Our compatriots are also actively ordering abroad, so we will think with them, deliver. Where can it be bought? I think the magazine will cost 3 thousand rubles in stores. “Signature publications” and other bookpoints have already come to us. We definitely will not be in large networks, rather, a calculation for interesting spaces.
The subscription, of course, will also be. Yes, because the peculiarity of our project is that we have quite close contact with people, because we make a lot of offline events-lectures, evenings, dinners, some kind of poppes, some collaborations-and at least with the reader in St. Petersburg are well known. But not only. At the end of January, I went to Samara with one alcoholic brand with which we cooperate, and there were two historical dinners.
Among the guests were our subscribers, who saw the announcement not at the restaurant, but it was from us. These are intelligent, educated citizens who are trying to find some new meanings, to see how it was [before]. It seems to me that now there is a big request for a legacy. It began in Covid, when it became harder to travel somewhere abroad and so on. People and business began to look for some meanings within themselves, trying to create something new, but already supported by our history.
And this request continues to only grow, because people realized that it was no longer working-just copy some cool bar from New York and put it in Petersburg or Moscow alone, and you already need to create some kind of internal meanings. And this works based on our heritage, which is rich in inspirational examples. Unfortunately, this aspect [of everyday life] in Russia was historically little attention.
When we talk about the history of St. Petersburg, then most often through the prism of epoch -making events, revolution, war, and so on. Therefore, with such attention to everyday life - how people lived in general, how their day, evening, leisure - and much attention to us was arranged, this is not enough. Now everyone suddenly undertook to look for him - to take at least the Russian Baryna project Ksenia Sobchak.
And what is Russian style in your understanding? And what elements of the everyday life of the beginning of the twentieth century would it make sense to return to our everyday life? In fact, the city life of the beginning of the 20th century is often much more understandable, much closer to us than, for example, E years. We do about the same thing as people did in the year.
The rhythm of life and classes is closer, it seems to me than in the second half of the 20th century.
